1 ton of refrigeration equals 12,000 BTU/hour. This unit is mainly used to measure the capacity of cooling systems like chillers and VRF. To convert tons to BTU, multiply the tonnage by 12,000. For example, a 2-ton system equals 24,000 BTU/hour.
Conversion from Kilowatt (kW) to BTU/hour
1 kW = 3412.14 BTU/hour
So a 5 kW device corresponds to:
5 kW × 3412.14 = 17,060 BTU/hour
To convert BTU/hour to kW:
BTU/hour ÷ 3412.14 = kW
Example:
18,000 BTU/hour ÷ 3412.14 = 5.275 kW
How many Watts is one BTU?
Direct conversion of BTU (energy) to Watts (power) isn’t possible, but BTU per hour (BTU/h) can be converted to Watts.
1 BTU/h ≈ 0.293071 Watts
Or conversely:
1 Watt ≈ 3.412 BTU/h
